Six go Sea to Snow

Following their first 3 day training camp at The Crossing, six young people have now completed the first part of the Sea to Snow Journey having canoed and bushwalked from Bermagui to the Wadbilliga River Escarpment . Congratulations to (from left to right) Caroline Buckley from Kalaru, Tom Newton from Bega, Jessica Thomas from Moruya, Allan van Breukelen from Bodalla, Ashley Mather from Lilli Pilli, and Heather Gow-Carey from Dignams Creek.

The second part of this epic Australian journey walking and cycling from Escarpment to Snow occurs in late November after a second training camp. Along the way these young people will help the community with landcare work and learn more about the natural environment at different altitudes and about living more sustainably. They will also complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Expeditions.

Please help this journey continue as an annual event in 2009. We rely on donations to meet the $800 cost for the journey and each year the young people involved help to raise community support and ensure that at least one other young person has the same chance to take part in this journey as they do .

As a supporter of The Crossing you might like to invite two of the Sea to Snow crew to speak to your organisation.  Perhaps you could provide a half scholarship $400 or full scholarship $800 for 2009 or simply an amount per kilometer of the 200km journey like a walkathon.

Australia should support a Sea to Snow journey for its young people and your assistance will help to establish a culture of young people supporting future young people on The Journey. (Applications for 2009 close on Friday 12 December 2008 - must be 16-23yo by the last weekend in January 2009 when training commences).
Donate on-line at 'Tax Deductible Gifts' on our menu list or send a cheque to PO Box 72 Bermagui 2546 addressed to 'The Crossing Land Education Trust Fund' and we will provide an endorsed reciept.

How to Get Involved in The Crossing
Provide financial or in-kind support.  Help with a specific project or fundraiser or with building materials or trade skills, even a hand with chainsawing the winter wood for young people to split is very welcome.  Annual events include the Youth Music Expo at Cobargo Folk Fest in late Feb or Open Day in late Aug.  We also sell Crossing World Music CD's, recipe books and t-shirts as fundraisers.

What to Bring
Volunteers need to bring a torch, work clothes, bedding and enough food to contribute to the pot to cover themselves and who ever else they might bring along. The Crossing is striving to be a zero waste camp so we ask volunteers to avoid bringing plastic packaging wherever possible. We also ask volunteers not to jeopardise the reputation of The Crossing in its community by bringing things or doing stuff that could spoil the positive fun and rewarding work done by others.

No Pets
Please don't bring pets as The Crossing is a Conservation Area.

Financial and In Kind Support
Since its foundation The Crossing has gratefully received financial support from several philanthropic organisations.  Thank you especially to the many generous individual philanthropists.

You might also like to Consider a bequest, donation or sponsorship of a young person. We believe in role-modelling and we aim to provide two half-scholarships in all programs for disadvantaged young people.  All gifts over $2 are tax deductible.

Sponsoring a young person costs the same as a new pair of hiking boots!
